If you would like to become an LGV/HGV driver you must be at least 18 years of age and hold a full driving licence.

The steps you need to take are:

• Driver Medical D2/D4 forms required
• Apply for provisional entitlement
• Theory tests
• Practical test (s)

To start your career as a professional LGV/HGV driver you need to pass a minimum of 2 theory tests prior to your practical training:

Module 1a – is a multiple-choice exam

Module 1b – covers hazard perception

Candidates who need to gain the Initial Driver CPC Qualification will also need to pass the following modules

Module 2 – Case Study

Module 4 – Show me /tell me practical training and test

Once you have passed these, you are ready for on the road training:

Module 3 category C1 (7.5Tonne) or C (Class 2 /Rigid) vocational test

Upon successful completion of the above and your driving licence has been returned, you can move on to the Category C+E (Class 1 /Articulated) – there are no further theory exams to be taken to obtain this licence.
