The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, also known as Driver CPC, was introduced 10th September 2008 for bus or coach drivers and a year later for lorry drivers. The ‘Driver Certificate of Professional Competence’ is designed to make roads safer and keep standards high across the European Union (EU). Training is carried out over a minimum period of 35 hours in easy to manage daily sections, giving you time to effectively develop your knowledge.

The first part of the Initial Driver CPC is the theory test and there are many ways to revise for this. Choose from a variety of books, ebooks and DVDs with the option of buying revision material from Desktop Driving. Online revision is a popular method and Sigma Studies recommends Driving Theory 4 All. There are also phone applications for both LGV and PCV theory tests as well as hazard perception tests. Step two is the case study test, via a touch-screen computer, carried out by the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and taken at approved test centres. The third step is the driving test where your driving abilities are assessed in your training vehicle and this takes approximately 90 minutes, including a reversing exercise, on-road assessment and an independent driving section. Finally there is a demonstration test of your knowledge and ability of various areas including a vehicle walk around check and safe vehicle loading.
