The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a new requirement for professional drivers that has been introduced across the European Union (EU) to maintain high driving standards and to improve road safety. The Driver CPC came into force:
- 10th September 2008 for bus or coach drivers.
- 10th September 2009 for lorry drivers.
Although most drivers come in scope of Driver CPC Regulations, there are some exemptions.
Keeping the Driver CPC Qualification
Drivers that have obtained the Driver CPC through gaining an Initial Driver CPC Qualification or through acquiring ‘grandfather rights’ need to carry out periodic training in order to continue driving professionally. This is done by carrying out 35 hours training in each 5 years. The Periodic Training involves attending courses which will then be registered on a National Driver CPC Database. There is no pass or fail. Each five year period will begin from the expiry of the current Driver CPC Qualification. For ‘old’ drivers who held their licence before the Driver CPC came into effect, their Driver CPC Qualification expires on:
- 9th September 2013, September 2018, September 2023, and so on… for bus or coach drivers.
- 9th September 2014, September 2019, September 2024, and so on… for lorry drivers.
Sigma Studies recommends that you carry out 7 hours (1 day) training each year to get the full benefit of the Driver CPC training.
Once you have completed the full 35 hours within a particular 5 year period, you will be sent a Driver Qualification Card (DQC). If you already have a DQC, then you will be sent a new one which will be updated showing the expiry as a further 5 years away.
NOTE: Only approved courses count towards the Periodic Driver CPC
