HGV/LGV Driver Growth in the UK
Over the past few years, the UK has seen a notable recovery in the HGV/LGV driver sector. Following the post-Brexit and COVID-19 shortages, driver numbers are rising again. In 2024 alone, the industry added over 36,000 new drivers — a 13% year-on-year increase — with average salaries now exceeding £41,000.
Despite this progress, challenges remain. A large portion of the workforce is over 50, and retention is an issue, with many drivers leaving due to retirement or better pay elsewhere. Around a quarter of logistics companies still report driver shortages.
Efforts to improve training access, increase pay, and raise awareness are helping to close the gap. But with demand projected to keep rising, attracting and retaining the next generation of drivers will be key to long-term stability.
