LGV Driver Training and Career Opportunities
A practical guide covering the route into professional LGV driving, what training is required, licence progression and the career opportunities available.
The route into professional LGV driving starts with a provisional entitlement, a D4 medical, and category-specific theory and practical tests. Most drivers train first for a Category C licence before progressing to Category C+E for articulated work, with the Driver CPC required alongside your licence for anyone driving professionally — combining an initial qualification with 35 hours of periodic training every five years.
Once qualified, LGV drivers are in strong demand across haulage, construction, retail distribution and specialist transport, with average salaries now exceeding £41,000. Around a quarter of logistics companies still report driver shortages, meaning newly qualified drivers can move into secure, well-paid roles quickly — with routes into fleet supervision or driver training further down the line.
